Flex Based Discovery Channel Earth Live

Discovery Channel recently released Earth Live, a 3D Rich Internet Application that can be used to interact with climate data and more. The site is intuitive, engaging, and allows contributors to post stories to enhance the data collected from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and NASA. It’s a cool app. But what I like most about it is that it looks like the type of application that would have been built in Flash Authoring. And yet it was built in Flex. It’s always amazing to see what talented individuals do with our tools and technologies.

Nice but I did get some errors popping up, needs more testing. It would be nicer still if you could zoom in and see more detail.
It’s not too hard to include Flash CS3 content into your Flex 2 app using the Flex Component Kit. Export your Flash CS3 as a swc and import into your Flex library as a class, or something like that. The trick is event handling and data sharing. I’m just starting to get into this and it opens a world of possibilities, cool stuff.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

It looks like Discovery pulled the app. I was fortunate enough to see it a few days ago and had no problems or errors.
Also, Ben, is there a convenient CF tag that can transfer all of your ColdFusion knowledge into my brain? [Good place to plug your favorite book or ref material, I suppose] 😉
    Keep up the great work.
