Build Flex Apps For Under $1K

Home » Build Flex Apps For Under $1K

Here is a quote from a press release issued today:
Macromedia is also introducing a new tiered licensing model to bring the power of Flex development within reach of every professional application developer, while also offering value-added capabilities that scale to meet the needs of the most sophisticated enterprise projects. Flex Builder 2 will be sold for less than $1000 per developer and will include the ability to develop, compile, and deploy Flex applications that connect to XML and SOAP web services with no additional charges or server licensing required. Flex Enterprise Services 2 will be licensed on a per CPU, per project, and enterprise license basis to offer the development efficiency, performance, advanced integration capabilities, and testing support that advanced applications will require.
More details to follow. But for now, this means that ColdFusion developers will be able to build CF powered Flex apps without the price tag being an issue. And for those that need the enterprise services (and many will, I suspect), that will be an option, too.

My only question is …. What is an "Enterprise Service"? Otherwise, very excited to be a CF developer.

Not a lot of detail that I can discuss yet, but there will be functionality that will only be available if services are running on the server (as Flex does now). Some info here: http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex2_intro.html

    Michael,
Take a look at the description of Enterprise Servicees at the bottom of this page. <a href="http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex2_intro.html">http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex2_intro.html</a&gt; That should give you some idea what they are.

This is a good thing, so now it is just $1000 per developer. Does this mean I don’t need to develp Open Laszlo applications any more??? ;o)

Appears as if accessing data through remoting (amf), enterprise server would be required.

Awww… please give us remoting too… I mean we already have a cf server license. Dang, so close to utopia, yet so far away.

The FAQ is a little sparse on CF and Flex Builder 2 details, but rest assured you’ll have a superier experience and solution if you’re using Flex Builder2 and CF vs Flex Builder by itself.

If remoting requires enterprise, then whats the $1k for? I dont consider remoting and Enterprise service. Flex without remoting is a porsche with no steering wheel. Looks real nice, but you cant do anything with it.

Slow down, don’t jump to any conclusions yet. As Damon just said, the info in the FAQ is vague at best. Don’t panic, and wait for more information. Really.

Cooper’s comments about remoting, along with his blog post about cf integration with flex2, I can’t help but assume he’s speaking of the next version CF.

hmmm, my mind was on flash forms for some weird reason. in that case, i’m speculating a true CFC-specific data service.

oh man, how i would love to have a CFC-specific data service, that would be by far the icing on the cake.
that would be such a huge step for integration between MM products…
