Gasp! Your survey was built with ASP

I know, that makes me cringe. 🙁

Yeah… I’m surprised that MM didn’t whip up a quick Flash+CF poll app on their site…..
    Oh well…

We’ve used Survey Monkey for the longest time because we do a lot of surveys. It provides a lot of functionality. We (Web Team) have looked at writing our own survey engine several times over the last five years but the business requirements from all over the company are so varied that it is more cost-effective to use a shrink-wrapped third-party survey system (hosted elsewhere).

p.s. I’ve probably been the strongest advocate of writing our own system, starting back in the BroadVision days!

No comments box in the survey? 🙂
We built our own survey engine based on Flex+CF, it’s a very popular tool.

Yeah, that’s one thing about building an app for internal purposes.. it’s sometimes not as cost effective.

    Since I haven’t dl’d it and tried it yet I can’t be 100% sure – but wouldn’t Raymond Camden’s Soundings application work???

The internal business reqs for a survey tool are extremely complex and include a lot of reporting functionality (so, no, Ray’s Soundings wouldn’t work). Believe me, we actually did due diligence on this and the cost of creating – *and* maintaining – exactly what business wanted was more than the annual cost of using a hosted solution.

The survey does not contain any question about presentation tier. I would like to see cfimage and merged client-side and server-side form validation support (as in ASP.NET) in CF.

We recently determined that nothing out there met our institutional form building/survey tool needs – we’ve been using surveyengine for about three years now and decided to expand that tool for use in our content management system. SurveyMonkey is a slick tool, but didn’t quite give us the options we felt we wanted. It took a team of three people about a month to run the focus groups needed to gather the requirements!

    .asp?
MM marketing doesn’t feel it’s important to be seen eating your own dog food?
Tell marketing that their confidence in .asp technology has influenced me to check it out for my next project 😛

    Sean,
I thought you worked for MM not the government! How can you guys have that much red tape for writting a survey application. I have been involved in user groups from the Allaire days… this is totally unacceptable. Standards are to be guides, not laws. There should be an exception committee to waive the red tape created by the rules committee. Then you could also form a exceptions review committee made up of a subset of the members of the rules committee. Well, to keep things level and the goals in line there needs to be another committee made up of members of the rules committee, members of the exceptions committee and some outside members to work as mediators. There… that ought to be enough standards to bring the app to pass! (Heh… if the app collects the raw data, and it’s secure… then use the thing!)

That’s the problem with success, John, someone is bound to come along and manage you. lol

    P.S.
Survey app stopped responding and page two wouldn’t load. HEH… a free app would perform this good. Yep, could happen to anyone. Just doesn’t quite make the point that it’s a cost savings if it isn’t working when other pages are. (Like this one.)
